This result is achieved through the formation of a hard oxide layer, which is induced by this type of treatment.
All aluminium alloys can be anodized. Greater difficulties are encountered with alloys containing high amounts of elements other than aluminium, since only aluminium contributes to the formation of the oxide layer.

Aluminium anodizing is carried out by immersing the material in a tank containing an acidic solution, which acts as the electrolyte. The positive pole is connected to the aluminium component, while the negative pole is connected to a cathode immersed in the solution.

At this stage, an electric current is applied to the electrolytic cell according to specific parameters. Hard anodizing is characterized and distinguished by a high current density and lower oxidation bath temperatures.
As a result of this process, oxygen ions develop on the surface of the component being treated and combine with the aluminium atoms to form a hard, compact layer of aluminium oxide. The molecular structure of the metal surface is therefore modified, resulting in a hard oxide layer characterized by uniform thickness, hardness, resistance and dielectric insulation.
The coating thickness ranges from 20 to 60 µm, depending on the original alloy and the specific requirements.

The hard anodizing treatment therefore provides significant properties, including:

Significant increase in surface hardness (>500 HV₀₀₅ according to UNI 7796)

Corrosion resistance (336 hours in salt spray testing according to UNI ISO 6227 on 6063 alloy)

Increased resistance to surface wear and abrasion

Lightfastness > 3000 hours of UV exposure

Dielectric strength

Moderate thermal insulation

Thanks to these improvements in the material’s properties, hard anodizing is widely used across many industries. Its applications are therefore numerous and diverse, including the automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, textile, food processing, mechanical engineering and marine sectors.

As regards aesthetic characteristics, hard anodizing retains the surface finish of the component, whether polished, satin-finished, brushed, or otherwise treated. The resulting colour depends on the alloy used and generally ranges from grey to brown. The surface can also be pigmented, although the base colour is typically dark.

Hard anodizing (or hard oxidation) is a surface treatment: an electrochemical process designed to improve the material’s surface mechanical properties.
